View Mytilene 2020-2021 cruises for 4 ships listing 7 cruises from Mytilene with today's best deals!

Mytilene lies at the SE edge of Lesbos, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The town sprawls around two broad bays divided by a promontory, crowned by the Gateluzzi fortress. The moment you arrive at the large port, the city of Mytilene will win your heart with its air of dolce vita. The island’s capital, built on seven hills, has preserved important features from its resplendent past and its outstanding cultural history. The architectural diversity of the buildings give Mytilene its colour. There are old manor houses, well-restored neo-classical style buildings, the modern Town Hall and Municipal Theatre along with banks, and restaurants.

A visit to the main street, Ermou, reveals antique shops and quaint little stores, with sections of the market place and their long-standing traditions close to hand. The Commander of Lesvos Monastery is such a touching place, and is appreciated by both the religiously inclined as well as the sightseer. Once inside it is a beautiful building with must-see detailing. Other places of interest include: the ancient theatre; the Polygonal Wall of the ancient town; the Liberty Statue of Mytilene; the ancient cemetery; and the mosaics at the archaeological museum, to name but a few. Add to this the modern buildings of interest and the many beautiful religious edifices and you will never run out of places of interest to be explored and enjoyed.

Above all, don’t miss visiting the renowned, ancient, Mytilene Castle, a huge 6th century fortress overlooking the town and harbour. Here visitors can enter the underground hiding-places and water reservoirs, as well as enjoy a great view of the sea and the city. The Theophilos Museum presents an insight into Greek history and folk life. The city has two excellent archaeological museums, one by the south harbour in an old mansion and the other two hundred metres further north. The former contains the rich Bronze Age remains from Thermi, as well as extensive pottery and figurine displays; the latter museum is especially rich in mosaics and sculpture.
