Kalamata is the capital and chief port of the Peloponnese peninsula, in the very south of Greece. It lies on the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf. The city is dominated by a thirteenth century castle, the Kastro, a most interesting backdrop to the town, and well worth visiting to obtain wonderful views of the town and the Gulf. Though the city does not date back to ancient times, and despite the devastating earthquake of 1986, some of the historical sites of the Venetian rule in the Middle Ages were spared, and provide a real sense of history. The rebuilding of the city still continues.

The natural beauty of Messinia with its indented shores, sandy beaches, forested mountains and fertile valleys, coexists with significant archaeological monuments. Kalamata is situated at the site of ancient Farai. The Byzantine church of the Virgin Ypapanti is located in the town. This church is famous for the nuns who weave Kalamata silk. Also of interest are the archaeological and folklore museums and the library that houses over 60,000 volumes. Don't forget to taste at least some of the varieties of honey, and of course the Kalamata Olives for which this town is world famous.

Kalamata is very pedestrian-friendly. Since 2006, many pedestrian-only streets have been constructed around Vasileos Georgiou square. Thirty kilometres NW of Kalamata are the ruins of Messini of Roman and Hellinistic years. See extensive remains including the theatre and stadium. Also, visit Polilimnio with its many lakes, vineyards and olive tree fields. There are a number of ancient castles in the surrounding countryside. Also, Kalamata is the ideal base for those who want to discover the secrets of Messinia, since it is centrally situated and many of the tourist and cultural destinations are easily reached by car.
