Igoumenitsa, with its large port and strategic location, is one of the fastest-growing cities in Greece. Just out of Igoumenitsa are small towns and beaches well away from the tourist trail. The mountains of the region are beautiful and there is much to take in if scenery and peace is what you are seeking. The town of Praga, 50 km to the south, is home to Nekromanteio of Aphyra. In ancient mythology the dead needed to cross the River Styx in a boat before they descended to the underworld; and this site, nestled on the Acheron River, is where the souls are said to have finally departed.

The city is surrounded by pine-laden hills and has a wonderful seaside road lined with sycamores and a park. It was liberated in 1913, during the 1st Balkan War. Before it became the prefecture’s capital, Igoumenitsa was a small seaside village with 500 residents. During WW2, the city was completely destroyed and rebuilt in the same location. After the rapid development in the 1960s, Igoumenitsa transformed into one of the country’s most important ports. Further afield, Meteora’s dramatic ‘monasteries in the sky’ perched atop huge towers of rock overlooking the Plain of Thessaly, are one of Greece’s most impressive and unforgettable sites.

There are many places worth visiting. These include: the C 11th Monastery of Ragiou where you will run into the river’s irrigation dam and the stone bridge of Goumani; the archaeological site of Gitani, which flourished during the Hellenistic period and was later destroyed by the Romans; and the castle of Doliani that dates back to the Classical period and is located near the settlement of Geroplatanos. Filiates is the starting point for excursions in the surrounding villages of Finiki, Faneromeni, Giromeri, Plesio and Sideri. Also popular is the arched stone bridge of the Kalpakiotikos River near the village of Elea.
