Narsarsuaq is a settlement in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, with a population of around 200. It was the principal city of Greenland in the times of Erik the Red, a murderous Norwegian explorer in the area at the end of the ninth century. Today there is a thriving tourism industry in and around Narsarsuaq. Close to the airport there is a unique botanical garden of the Arctic, a live collection of trees and bushes from both the arctic and the alpine tree-lines of the entire Northern Hemisphere. Founded in 1988, it encompasses 15 hectares sheltering 110 plant species, with more than 50,000 trees of various provinces.

Other attractions include a great diversity of wildlife, gemstones, tours to glaciers, and an airfield museum. During WWII it was an important stepping stone for thousands of planes, many piloted by women on their way from the aircraft factories in North America to the battlegrounds of Europe. Sailing amongst blue ice or hiking and flying around lush hills and glaciers are the classic experiences that add great action to your holiday.

But a true outdoorsman can also find happiness in the small delights around Narsarsuaq. Go fishing on the beach and ride bikes along grassy pathways to find relics from the time when Narsarsuaq was an American military base. Or, count eagles and hawks overhead as you pick the most beautiful napping spot in the Valley of Flowers. While this beauty summons you into the nature, it is the solitude and the contrast of idyllic valleys that keep you there.
