Pim Island (formerly Bedford Pim Island) lies to the east of Ellesmere Island (the northernmost island of Canada), part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The two islands are separated by the narrow Rice Strait. Pim Island lies 340 km north of the Arctic Circle, about as far north as explorer ships currently venture in this region. (However, it is still 1270 km from the Geographic North Pole.) Pim Island is about 13 km by 7.5 km.

The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-1884) to Ellesmere Island, led by Adolphus Greely, was ill-fated. The party wintered at Camp Clay on Pim Island in 1883, and in 1884 on Pim Island the seven survivors of the original 21 were rescued at Cape Sabine. The ruins of their escapade are still visible today, and there’s a plaque attached to a rock to remember the expedition. The full story of their privations, cannibalism and execution of one of the party remains untold. Many of the geographical names of this Arctic region derive from such heroic expedition members of the 19th C. The island is named in honour of naval officer and barrister Bedford Pim of HMS Resolute.

Pim Island has a small ice cap and several ponds that are ice-free for up to three months in summer. The island is rocky, only about five percent of its area is covered by vegetation. The sparse plant cover allows only a thin colonization of the island by larger animals. The hare, arctic fox and polar bears are especially noteworthy. In the surrounding ocean are narwhal, walrus, ringed seal and bearded seal. Although there are no bird colonies, there are Arctic seabirds such as guillemots, eider ducks and ice gulls, as well as ptarmigan.
