We dealt mainly with Breanna, who offered some good advice when we were booking and was very helpful with any questions we had along the way. Thank you."

Karrat Fjord has its mouth in Nordost Bay that in turn is part of the larger Baffin Bay off western Greenland. Further inland from its mouth the fjord splits into a number of tributary fjords - Rink Glacier, Ingia Glacier and Umiamako Glacier fjords, as well as the Ukkusissat Fjord. All these glaciers are tidewater glaciers, meaning they terminate in the sea. As the ice reaches the sea, pieces break off, or calve, forming icebergs. The Rink Glacier is the largest glacier on the west coast of Greenland. It is ranked second or third in iceberg production in western Greenland. It is also the swiftest moving and highest surface ice in the world.

Karrat Fjord lies 550 km north of the Arctic Circle. Among the islands at the mouth of the fjord is Upernivik Island. It is very mountainous, its highest point being Palup Qaqaa, an ultra-prominent peak (one of 38 in Greenland that are above 1500 m) reaching 1,903 m. Another island in Karrat Fjord is Illorsuit Island, with a settlement of around 90 inhabitants at Illorsuit on the NW coast. Illorsuit achieved widespread attention when it experienced a severe tsunami on June 17, 2017, due to landslide that caused a magnitude 4.1 earthquake located north of the city.

The landslide fell into Karrat Fjord causing a tsunami that destroyed 11 homes and killed four people from the settlement at Nuugaatsiaq, and damaging two other villages. The slice of mountain that fell into the sea measured 1000 m across and 300 m high. Across the fjord 7 km away the water rose by 50 m. This places it among the tallest tsunamis in history. Future landslides are anticipated. South of Karrat Fjord is Uummannaq Fjord, a large fjord system with seven tributary fjords that lies immediately to the south of Karrat Fjord. (There are 127 “most important” fjords in Greenland.)
