I probably won't use Clean Cruising again only because I always use the same agents here in Sydney. Your rep was superb."

Qeqertarsuaq (Danish, Godhavn) is a port and town on Disko Island off the west coast of Greenland, about 320 km inside the Arctic Circle. Established as a Danish whaling town in 1773, hunting and fishing are still the main occupations of the 900 inhabitants. From the sea the town’s colourful homes are reflected in the still water peppered by icebergs – every building functional, colourful, backed by jagged peaks covered by streaky summer clouds. Behind the settlement to the north is a distinctive 700m ‘tabletop’ mountain. Hunting seals and fishing for Greenland halibut are still the primary occupations of the island's inhabitants.

The Lyngmark Glacier is a few hours’ walk north of the town, and en route trekkers are rewarded with wonderful views, especially as they look back to see how small the icebergs appear. From the glacier icebergs can be seen 100km away. In summer visitors can experience whale watching and absorb the landscape. Sailing and whale watching starts in spring when right and bowhead whales are still in Disko Bay before heading west. Humpback whales arrive in the summer. Hiking trails lead to the lush hills in summer. Dog sledding is possible all year and sleds can be rented.

The area of Kuannit, located not far from there, is a fertile area with loads of angelica – a small plant loved by everyone in Greenland. On your way there, you will pass the Red Torrent. Qeqertarsuaq Museum holds many stories of when Qeqertarsuaq was the capital of the north. University of Copenhagen’s Arctic Station is a year-round, environmental research facility to the NE of the town. The best way to get around is by foot. The church in Qeqertarsuaq is called the Lord's Ink Pot and is definitely worth visiting. There’s a souvenir shop and restaurant. And the locals bottle water, labelled ‘938’.
