Cape York lies at the northern end of Melville Bay that hugs the northwestern coast of Greenland. It is part of the much larger Baffin Bay that separates Greenland from the northern islands of Canada. The cape lies 1010 km inside the Arctic Circle, and 1550 km south of the Geographic North Pole. There are no permanent settlements near Cape York. There’s a chain of small islands that stretch east and south from Cape York along the coast of Greenland. The largest of these is Meteorite Island, 37 km to the ENE of Cape York, where near the Inuit island settlement of Savigsivik (‘place of meteorite stone’) eight large pieces of the Cape York meteorite were found.

Landing 10,000 years ago, its discovery made it one of the largest iron meteorites ever found. Its existence was indicated by Inuit worked the iron by stamping and hammering it to make tools and harpoons. Eight large pieces weighing 58 tonnes were recovered between 1894 and 1984, and even are now on display in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and other museums around the world. Interestingly, fragments of imported basalt rocks used to pummel the iron meteorite pieces remain in large piles in the region.

There’s a 12 m monument at Cape York in memory of Robert Peary, the American explorer and United States navy officer who made several expeditions to the region in the late 19th and early 20th C. The monument is atop a hill overlooking the bay. Nearby a number of glaciers descend to the sea. An old hunter’s shack stands on the shoreline and colonies of Auks and Guillemots make their homes in cliffs. The waters off the Cape are littered with icebergs.
