Cayenne (pop. 132,000) is the capital of French Guiana, an overseas department of France, situated on a former island at the mouth of the Cayenne River on the Atlantic Coast. The important port Dégrad des Cannes is located on the estuary of the Mahury River, 9 km to the SE of the Cayenne River estuary. Timber, rosewood essence, rum, and gold are exported in small quantities. Cayenne is very ethnically diverse, with populations of Creole, Haitian, Brazilian, European, and Hmong and other Asian origins. Along this coast the Guyanas region includes, from W to E, Spanish Guyana (now part of Venezuela), British Guyana (Guyana), Dutch Guyana (Suriname), French Guyana, and Brazilian Guyana.

Cayenne centres on its main commercial street, the Avenue Général de Gaulle. Here are the official buildings, town hall, the Préfecture, residence of French Guiana's Préfect, and the Musée Départmental Franconie. The remains of 17th C Fort Cépérou and the Lighthouse/pagoda are at the western edge of the city. The town of Cayenne grew around the protective walls of the fort. Other historical sites are: Cayenne Cathedral, the Musée des Cultures Guyanaise, and the Jardin botanique de Cayenne (b. 1828). Outside the city, much is covered by thick jungle, home to diverse plant and animal life. Interestingly, the Guiana Space Centre (a French and European spaceport) is 66 km to the NW of Cayenne. And it is not certain which name came first- the city Cayenne, or the pepper cayenne.

From the early 17th C European colonialism was fought between Spain, Portugal, France and Britain. In 1814 the country was returned to French control. The penal colony of Cayenne (1852 to 1953) was actually dispersed, to the three Salvation’s Islands (that included Devil’s Island), and three prisons on the mainland some distance from Cayenne. The Cayenne River was prominently featured in both the movie and book Papillon by Henri Charrière.
