Summer Isles are an archipelago on the west coast of Scotland, lying at the mouth of the sea loch, Loch Broom. About 15 km to the SE of Summer Isles is the small town of Ullapool. This is the Highlands region of Scotland. The largest of about 18 islands is Tanera Mor, with just a few inhabitants, a post office that has issued its own stamps, and no roads just walking paths. The island was once host to herring fishing, now ended, and is presently owned privately. The owner, Ian Wace, intends to oversee a four-year development to Tanera Mòr, which could become an "idyllic retreat capable of hosting up to 60 paying guests".

The islands are part of the Assynt-Coigach National Scenic Area, one of 40 in Scotland. The purpose is to identify areas of exceptional scenery and to ensure its protection from inappropriate development. These areas are considered to represent the type of scenic beauty "popularly associated with Scotland and for which it is renowned". The islands have diverse flora due to little grazing. Animal life includes otters, seals, backing sharks and porpoises. Bird species include eider, heron, red grouse, and buzzards.

The owners of Tanera Mor advice visitors to bring the following: sunglasses, cameras, paint boxes, binoculars, midge cream, thermos flasks and comfortable old clothes. Pack your anorak for walking and your glad-rags for dinner. And they say the weather can go “from Aegean to Arctic inside a week.”
