Stornoway is an attractive town and the administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The shape of the town is defined by the harbour, and is home to a beautiful, rugged landscape of rolling grassy hills and crinkly inlets of the sea. Take a leisurely stroll round the harbour and see everything from the ferries to cargo boats and small visiting yachts, as the harbour is definitely an asset to the town. Interestingly, several streets in the centre are pedestrian areas with good access to an interesting range of shops. This also provides visitors the opportunity to appreciate the friendliness of the residents.

Originally a Viking settlement, close by there are some spectacular monuments of ancient settlements 4000-5000 years old. Within walking distance is a well preserved fort as well as the equally interesting stone circle - one of the most spectacularly sited stone circle in the UK - at Callanish. The double rock wall is intact, and made entirely without mortar. In town, An Lanntair is a lively arts centre, a cinema, and a café that offers great food and wide range of cheeses, oils, teas and assorted goodies.

The neo-gothic Lews Castle, currently being restored, will again be a magnificent structure. The grounds with their interesting fauna and flora are worth visiting. There is also a very pleasant coffee/souvenir store in which to take a rest. When completed it will also be the home of the local museum that highlights the local history, and displays of artefacts from the Viking era. A lighthouse, seaweed processing plant, and a renewable energy manufacturing yard are situated on Arnish Point at the mouth of the harbour and visually dominate the approaches.
