Cruises visiting Skomer Island & all Skomer Island cruises for  2019

View Skomer Island 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 6 cruises from Skomer Island with today's best deals!

Skomer Island (3 sq.km.) in SW Wales lies 800 m off the mainland across the treacherous Jack Sound, and overlooks the Irish Sea. It was last settled in 1950. The island is a national nature reserve managed by The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales. There are farm buildings in the centre of the island. Though uninhabited, visitors view its stone circles, megalith, and remains of prehistoric houses. During the spring the whole island is covered with bluebells. Volunteers welcome visitors, conduct surveys, weigh chicks and manage vegetation.

Protected for its scientific and historic value, wildlife abound. Skomer is best known for its breeding seabird population, particularly puffins and the difficult-to-see nocturnal Manx shearwater. The birds make good use of rabbit burrows. Rabbits were introduced in the 14th century and their burrows and grazing have had a profound effect on the island landscape. Endemic is the rodent Skomer vole, preyed on by the short-eared owl. The most stunning view is The Wick, a shear cliff above glistening water, home to nesting seabirds. Daytime visitors are limited to 250. Marked paths lead you around the island, supervised by wildlife trust volunteers.

Sea life includes the harbour porpoises, grey seals basking on the rocks, sea slugs and whales. Visitors need to be agile to alight on the shore, handle steep steps, and walk the designated pathways. Landing is weather-dependent. Many return, attracted by the awesome bird life, especially the puffins in season, for their ‘friendliness’. Bring binoculars, and the walk around the island takes less than three hours. Visit the Marine Nature Reserve exhibition. Take a look around Lockley Lodge, which has information about the island and a shop. Other interesting wildlife on Skomer includes a breeding population of Glow-worms.
