The archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest and westernmost part of the British Isles, lies 64 km west of Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The largest island is Hirta (670 hectares), with its 350m sea cliffs the highest in the UK. Once home to a Norse settlement, today, while a small area is leased to the Ministry of Defence as a tracking station, it has received many national and international designations in recognition of its outstanding natural and cultural heritage. The island is owned by the National Trust for Scotland. It became one of Scotland's six World Heritage Sites in 1986.

The evacuation of its native population in 1930 brought to a close an extraordinary story of survival and isolation, and visitors will almost ‘feel’ the account while examining the remains of the medieval village on the island of Hirta. Today three organisations, The National Trust for Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the MoD, work in partnership to further a continuing programme of conservation and research on the islands to ensure the care and protection of this World Heritage Site. Parties of volunteers work to restore the many ruined stone buildings.

St Kilda is a breeding ground for many different bird species. Land animals are mice, insects and grey seals. Plant life is heavily influenced by the salt spray, strong winds and acidic peaty soils. St Kilda's marine environment of underwater caves, arches and chasms offers a challenging diving experience. Films about the island include: St Kilda, Britain's Loneliest Isle, and On the Edge of the World. Interestingly the story of St Kilda has attracted artistic interpretations, including an opera in Scots Gaelic called St Kilda: A European Opera.
