the ship was more than i expected very beautiful the biggest one we have been lots of people but it did not seem over crowded and plenty of room to move around and plenty of entertainment on board"

The deep-water Scrabster Harbour is located in Thurso Bay on the North coast of Caithness, Scotland. It provides vital access to the remote Outer Orkney Islands which lie off the NE coast of Scotland. The area has much to offer visitors, with a wealth of historic buildings, heritage centres and tours viewing the majestic North Coast and all the wildlife and natural heritage on offer. Indeed, its huge skies and natural beauty made the area a Royal favourite for more than 50 years. Indeed the Castle and Gardens of Mey in Scrabster were renovated and restored by the Queen Mother. Currently, with its gardens, animal centre, gift shop and tearoom, it is a major drawcard for visitors.

Holburn Head Lighthouse, now privately owned, built in 1862 by the family of Robert Louis Stevenson, is the first stop in a walk to Holborn Head. Also seen on this walk is a memorial cairn celebrating those Scotsmen who went to war and did not return. Thurso Heritage Museum, in the old Town Hall, displays Pictish and Christian fossils and carved stones, and a reconstruction of a croft interior. Renovated in 2008, it features a museum, tourist office, visitor displays and a cafe.

Near the harbour are the 17thC ruins of Old St Peter's Church, which stand on the site of the original 13thC church, and are well worth visiting. Then there’s the idyllic country riverside walk that starts near Waterside House and takes about 45 minutes at a stroll, which is a very popular local pursuit in reasonable weather. Another option is to walk all the way - about 40mins - to Scrabster along cliffs for brilliant views, but be aware that the winds can be a problem.
