Cruises visiting Penzance & all Penzance cruises for  2019

Penzance is the most (South-) Westerly town in England, and capital of West Cornwall. It lies 10 miles from Land’s End. With a population of around 20,000, the town’s history precedes Roman times, endured plagues and sackings in medieval and Tudor times, and today, being at the end of rail and bus lines, it is a centre of tourism. Many edifices of historical interest are recognised.

Penzance was the birthplace of Sir Humphry Davey, the great British scientist and inventor of the Miner’s Safety Lamp; hence his statue stands in town, which was once a centre for mining education in this tin-rich county. Walk around the harbour area to see Georgian and Regency buildings, the triangular Jubilee Bathing Pool (wonderfully Art Deco), and a little out of town you’ll visit Trereife House, a Queen Anne style manor house. There are art galleries and a museum in the centre of town. The Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera The Pirates of Penzance (1879), in good humour, pictured this peaceful town as a haven of pirates.

The landscape and culture reminds one of Celtic times, along with majestic cliffs and sandy beaches, sparkling sea, its history of smugglers, and as the home of poets, writers and artists. A few kilometres east of the town and across Mount’s Bay is the island-castle St Michaels Mount, the UK’s equivalent of France’s Mont Saint-Michel.
