Noss is a small island off the east coast of the Isle of Bressay in the Scottish Shetland Islands. It lies 200km NE of the northernmost tip of Scotland, and 200km W of Norway, in the North Sea. Uninhabited, the Isle of Noss has been run as a sheep farm since 1900. It is a National Nature Reserve, with over 150,000 birds and chicks, and is truly is a bird watchers delight. Noss is one of the most spectacular wildlife sights in Europe. The shoreline includes dramatic high cliffs and inlets to the NE, and sheep graze on rolling grassed moorland sprinkled with wildflowers in June and July.

There are some fascinating ancient sites that are worth visiting, such as the burnt mound at Helia Cluve that is some 4,000 years old, as are the remains of a medieval chapel and burial ground outside the farmhouse at Gungstie (aka Hametoun). Nearby is the 17th century Scottish National Heritage visitor centre, and just behind is the 19th century pony pound built to house mares. Spring time results in a delightful floral display as fine as any garden rockery. The wild flowers are brilliantly coloured and nestle amongst rich vegetation.

Above all else are the innumerable birds that stain the towering 180m cliffs of the headlands white. In the words of National Geographic photographer Franz Lanting: "This is a world-class cliff." The rocky ledges house a fascinating variety of seabirds from puffins and fulmars at the top to guillemots and razorbills in the basement. Imagine seeing gannets nose-dive into the water at 100kph to a depth of 6m. The Reserve is managed by the Scottish Natural Heritage. Resident seals and the visiting Otters feed in the dense kelp forest surrounding the 313 hectare island. Noss is a good example of how a working farm and wildlife can co-exist.
