Inverness (“Mouth of the River Ness”) in the Scottish Highlands is the northernmost city in the UK, on the far NE coast of Scotland. Cruise ships dock at the deepwater Port of Invergordon on Cromarty Firth, greeted by piper and pipe band. Excursions take passengers to Loch Ness, Dunrobin Castle, Whisky Distilleries and golf courses in the area. Inverness is about 36 km to the south. Today high-tech businesses have replaced traditional distilleries, but Highland Games and bagpipes are very much part of life. Gaelic, once the majority first language, is now spoken by just 5%. Inverness is regarded as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland.

Here is where Inverness Castle inspires royal ghost stories, and pipe bands provide summer sounds. Wander among the stone buildings and over suspension bridges to appreciate attractive floral displays, and grab a pint from a local pub. Then watch a kilt-making demonstration at the Highland House of Fraser. A miniature railway runs at weekends from Easter to the end of October, and daily during school holidays. Close by you will also find the Floral Hall, a sub-tropical horticultural extravaganza with a waterfall, fish, and a wide range of plants and trees. Of particular interest is the cactus hall. Other places of interest include the many museums and Scottish family archives.

There are many pleasant tours on offer. These include an historic walking tour of Inverness with a guide in a tartan waistcoat, and tours in the evenings such as the Crime and Punishment walk that informs about gory local history. Rickshaw tours operate daily from Bridge Street on the hour, or hire a bike. Vehicle tours can be arranged in a 6-seater MPV with guide. Take a walk down along the river banks (in the direction of the Caledonian Canal) and you'll find the Ness Islands where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the shops.
