Holy Loch, in the Scottish county of Argyll, is a small Sea Loch (lake, firth or fjord), one of many small lochs that open to the 130 km major water way the Firth of Clyde. Holy Loch is about 1 km wide and 3 km long, depending on the tide. The loch is lined with small settlements which back onto the Highlands that rise from 400 to 700m. In the region are remains of old churches from as early as the 6th C; and by the 15th C Holy Loch received its name, and it became the spiritual home of the powerful Clan Campbell. The remains of their Dunoon Castle can be seen at Dunoon, 3 km south of the Loch.

Robertson’s Yard was one of the foremost Scottish wooden boat-builders in the late 1800s and early 1900s, producing many racing yachts. Sadly, all that is left of the original yard is the slipway at the village of Sandbank on the SW shores of the Loch. During WWII the loch was a submarine base, and from the 1960s to 1980s it was a US Navy nuclear submarine base. (Interestingly, in 1974 just outside the loch two Russian and US nuclear submarines collided in a major Cold War incident – as revealed 40 years later.)

Benmore Botanic Garden is about 5 km north of the loch, a magnificent garden steeped in history. Well worth a visit, be shown around on the people-carrier to view the Redwood avenue, statue of ‘A Boy with Two Dolphins’, the Fernery, Puck’s Hut, and the different flora of Bhutan, Chile, Japan and Tasmania. The gardens lie in a magnificent mountainside setting. Visitors take a guided tour or walk at their own pace with a complimentary audio handset. At the port just wander around the inns, memorial, and older buildings.
