The small town of Fowey, at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, UK, has a unique ancient atmosphere. The harbour entrance lies between St. Catherine's Castle and Polruan headland. The anchorage is set in a postcard setting with medieval and Tudor cottages along narrow, steep, cobbled streets, with the river below, and perfumed with flowers from hanging baskets and window boxes. The town’s origins date from the 13th C. Fowey is a popular destination for holidaymakers and boasts an excellent selection of quality shops, galleries and restaurants. Interestingly Dame Daphne Du Maurier spent most of her life in the area.

There is a wealth of interesting and historic destinations just an easy coach ride away, and many lovely walks around the Estuary with its quiet waters, green woodland, and a mass of wildlife. There are the ruins of St Catherine's Castle built by Henry VIII in the 1530s to defend Fowey Harbour. The sight of the river when the winter gales are raging can be quite spectacular, challenging sailors and yachtsmen. Eating out can range from a gourmet meal in one of the many first class restaurants, to local ale and a pasty in a sleepy Cornish country pub.

The Eden Project, just 16km from Fowey, is a very popular option for families, with rock climbing, as well as storytelling sessions in the Citrus Grove. Other places within reach are: Lanhydrock House and Garden, one of the most beautiful National Trust properties in Cornwall; and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the world-renowned restored gardens and pleasure grounds just 24km away from Fowey. Back in town the nearby Readymoney Cove is home to a local beach.
