Cowes is an English seaport town on the Isle of Wight. It is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east Bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, one of the few remaining chain ferries. Cowes is a gateway town for the Isle of Wight. A high speed catamaran passenger ferry connects with Southampton on the mainland. (The major cruise terminal at Southampton is 18 km north of the Cowes terminal.) Cowes is known for its international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815.

The town gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which runs annually in the first week of August. The event more than doubles its population of about 10,000, and becomes the busiest time of the year for local businesses. Local industry in both Cowes and East Cowes has always centred on the building and design of marine craft and materials associated with boat-making, including the early flying boats, and sail-making. It is the place where the first hovercraft was tested.

Sites to look for include: West Cowes Castle, built by Henry VIII to stop invasions by the French and the Holy Roman Empire, now the clubhouse of the Royal Yacht Squadron; Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s seaside palace of Osborne; St Mildred’s Church in Whippingham; the East Cowes Heritage Centre with its histories from smugglers to hovercraft building; the Classic Boat Museum; the Wight Military and Heritage Museum; plus numerous other attractions in west and east Cowes.
