Saint-Nazaire is a commune of traditional Brittany in western France. The town has a major harbour, on the right bank of the Loire River estuary, facing the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic Ocean. The town is at the south of the second-largest swamp in France, called "la Brière". Given its location, Saint-Nazaire has a long tradition of fishing and shipbuilding. During WWII it was a major Axis strategic port. Of interest more recently, RMS Queen Mary 2 was built (2003) at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard, one of the world’s leaders in ship-building.

The Submarine Base in Saint-Nazaire provides an excellent chance to see the massive structure that was home to part of the German submarine fleet during WWII. This former Nazi submarine base is now a Speciality Museum. Be fascinated by the walk around the roof and interior before entering the museum. Some rooms are exhibits of ‘times gone by,’ but the long room that gives visitors an idea of what it would be like looking out from a ship across the ocean is truly fantastic. Don't miss the interesting views from the roof terrace. It also houses the well-hidden Tourist Information office.

Explore L’Espadon, a real submarine that was used by the French navy from 1960-85 during the Cold War. The tour gives a great flavour of life below the waves for periods of up to three months. There are audio-guides in English. Guided tours of the shipyards and the port terminals are also available, although English-language tours are only available to groups of 20 or more. Most museum items have English translations - but not all. The coast around St-Nazaire has some lovely beaches – take the old customs officer’s path, lined with Mediterranean flora, to Les Jaunais.
