One of the islands off the French coast known as the Golden Isles because of the way sunlight shimmers on its mica rock, Porquerolles, with a population still in the hundreds, provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Small coves separated by rugged cliffs offer excellent swimming. Porquerolles is beloved by filmmakers who use it as a South Sea island stand-in. With its lighthouse constructed in 1837 and the church in 1850, today the island is now part of a car-free National Park and nature conservatory that many visitors explore.

If you only have a short time, take a walk past the Plage de la Courtade to the Fort de la Repentance and to the semaphore, as both have excellent views out across the plains, the seaside, and the Plage de Notre-Dame cove. The Fort appears as a low, fortified structure on the hilltop, with a dry moat all around. In fact, it's mostly underground inside the hill. It's still an active fort, so there is no entry, but take the opportunity to explore its surrounds. The island’s village, with its large square and original church together with some delightful restaurants and cafes where visitors enjoy the outdoor atmosphere and are sure to taste the excellent local wine, makes for a pleasant experience.

If time permits, explore the countryside with its mosaic of vineyards as well as orchards with a variety of orange lemon, and olive trees. Then you can still find your own private beach and play Robinson Crusoe for several hours. Hiking or biking through forests, fragrant with wild rosemary and thyme, and with the topaz waters of the Mediterranean often in view, visitors quickly fall under the spell of the southern French coast as it has existed for centuries. Be aware that no smoking is allowed beyond the village and that drinking water is available only at the village.
