The medieval walled town of Concarneau is one of the most photographed in Brittany, a popular resort and one of France's largest fishing ports. An artist's haven populated by notables such as Robert Wylie in the 1860s, the town still has a creative atmosphere as does nearby Pont-Aven, where Gauguin once had a studio. Pont-Aven is a vibrant and charming destination peppered with art galleries, shops and restaurants. In the 19th century, Pont-Aven was a small commercial town known for its mills and its port. It has always inspired artists, and American painters began arriving here in 1865. From 1865 onwards, life in the town changed radically.

The town of Pont-Aven is best known for the historic watermills along the banks of the quiet river Aven, and it is these that provide the scenic backdrop for the town. Apart from the mills you will want to stroll around the quiet port overlooked by Breton houses, and to explore the town itself where there are a good number of traditional granite and whitewashed houses. The whole of the centre of Pont-Aven is very pleasant and one of the favourite towns in the region. Immediately recognizable by their delicacy and their unique taste, the cakes are part of the culinary heritage Pont-Aven.

Be sure to explore the streets both sides of the main bridge, and to amble down some of the smaller side streets such as Rue des Meunières (to the west of the port) to see the most traditional parts of the village. Pont-Aven is inseparable from the story of Paul Gauguin and his friends. Featuring a museum (re-opened in December 2015), workshops municipal artists, and many private places of exposure, Pont-Aven is firmly rooted in his artistic vocation. Indeed it is a village whose colourful face painting is the focal point. It is an artists’ paradise.
