Girolata is situated on Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located west of the Italian Peninsula, and 190km SE of Nice on the French mainland. Girolata is a fishermen's village that is transformed from a very quiet backwater for most of the village to a thriving tourist centre in the tourist months. There is a small beach in Girolata, and a dominating Genoese Fortin de Girolata, a small XVIth century fortress, that stands above the village. Below, a natural harbour attracts smaller yachts that are exploring the coast.

Hiking on breathtaking lanes is extremely popular. Hikes usually start on the top of the mountains where you'll enjoy fantastic scenic views, and end on deserted tropical-like beaches. To the west of Girolata is the Scandola Nature Reserve, which includes the peninsula and surrounding sea. The jagged and sheer cliffs contain many grottos and are flanked by numerous stacks and almost inaccessible islets and coves, such as Tuara. The coastline is also noted for its red cliffs, sand beaches, and headlands. The famous red rock of the region, makes for a very impressive scenic location.

The town is more of a farming community, with a boardwalk on the waterfront for day trippers and boaters, and the beach is shared with cows. There are a few eateries in the shade, with fresh sea food. Take a small boat tour of the bay and peninsula, and learn about the geological formation of the caves. The highlight is of course the scenery, the chance to see the wildlife, and the astonishingly clear sea water here.
