The Camargue is the region of 930 sq.km. located south of Arles, France, bordered between the Mediterranean Sea and the Great Rhône and Little Rhône of the Rhône delta. Officially established as a regional park and nature reserve in 1970, the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue covers some of the wildest and most protected in all of Europe. A roadside museum provides background on flora, fauna, and the history of the area. It is essentially a lonely barren plain of rough pasture, grazed by black bulls that are exported to Spain as well as fighting locally, and the famous white Camargue horses ridden by local cowboys.

This delta area comprises brine lagoons and reed-covered marshes that are home to more than 400 species of birds and is marked as an Important Bird Area. It is one of Europe’s habitats for the pink flamingos. The region is a habitat of insects, particularly mosquitos. The flora have adapted to saline conditions. The ancient industry of salt production continues to this day. Visitors can traverse the region on horseback, quad bike, horse-drawn carriage, hovercraft and helicopter. Or, head for the expansive sea beaches (one for nudists) of Languedoc Roussillon. Camargue is also renowned for its delight French restaurants.

On the western boundary of Camargue is a mediaeval fort Aigues-Mortes with well preserved walls. The medieval heritage from the 13th and 14th centuries of the commune and its proximity to the sea attract many tourists and residents of France. Historical sites include The Tower of Constance and the ramparts (1254), The Carbonnière Tower (c. 1346), Saint-Louis Square in the heart of the city, the Plan des Theatres that are arenas for the Camargue bullfights, and The Church of Notre-Dame-des-Sablons (once a Temple of Reason during the Revolution).
