Cruises visiting Belleville & all Belleville cruises for  2020

Belleville, a commune located on the Rhone River in the Beaujolais wine region, is a neighbourhood of Paris, France. Belleville was a wine-making village, independent of Paris, until 1860. It was popular for its country cafes. Today it is home to one of Paris’s lively Chinatowns, a burgeoning artist quarter, and a dizzying array of cultures. Belleville has always been a working class neighbourhood, with immigration generating much of the area's energy and diversity. According to legend, as supported by a plaque on the steps of the Rue de Belleville, the iconic French singer Edith Piaf was born here under a lamp post.

Within Belleville there is a cemetery and park, the Parc de Belleville, which ascends the western slope of the hill. It also offers strolls through tree-covered lanes, cosy park benches and a magnificent 180-degree view of the city. It’s certainly a strikingly modern contrast to the classical gardens of the city centre and the eccentric nineteenth century romanticism of the nearby Parc des Buttes Chaumont, both of which are a pleasure to visit. Tucked away just off the main, busy stretch of Boulevard de la Villette is Place Sainte Marthe, a tranquil and sunny corner of Paris with an old Mediterranean vibe.

There are opportunities for wine tasting at nearby Chateau de Corcelles-en-Beaujolais, and the Earl Frederic Trichard Winery. Considered by some to be the coolest street in Belleville, the Graffiti street, Rue Dénoyez certainly does have a lot to offer. This legal wall for Graffiti has certainly turned around the street’s former serious decline. There is now a thriving art community here, along with plenty of great stores to support it. The Hotel Dieu which is a well preserved former hospital, now ceased, has been beautifully preserved and its pharmacy in particular is well worth a visit.
