Bayonne is a city and commune in SW France at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers. The Nive divides Bayonne into Grand Bayonne and Petit Bayonne, with five bridges between the two, both quarters still backed by Vauban's walls. Interestingly, today Bayonne's botanic gardens adjoin the walls on both sides of the Nive. Visitors will come upon vestiges of the rich past that contributed to the growth of Bayonne. Visitors can absorb the beginnings of the town, fortifications in Roman times of which certain elements are still visible, to the magnificent 14th century gothic Cathedral Sainte-Marie in the town centre.

From the Gothic cathedral, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Basque Museum, Bayonne boasts an exceptional cultural heritage that includes the cloister, the ramparts, Gothic vaults, the Château-Vieux and the old town restoration project. In addition to its yummy chocolates, Bayonne is famous for its marzipan and prime smoked ham. In contrast, according to tradition, the bayonet was developed here in the early 17th century. Whatever the case, Petit Bayonne with its narrow streets, attractive riverside buildings clad with shutters painted in the national colours of red and green, student bars and shoals of waterside restaurants will be enjoyed by all.

Because of Bayonne’s commercial importance and its close proximity to Spain, the city features many fortified structures. Most of the original wall that surrounded the city is gone but it is still possible to see some of the remnants when wandering through its streets. Some other examples of the city’s defensive structures include the Porte d’Espagne, Château-Neuf, Château-Vieux and the citadel. Unfortunately, most of the fortifications are closed to the public, however, it is possible to view them from the outside. The rich historical and commercial past of Bayonne will enchant any visitor.
