New Island is one of the southwesterly island of the Falklands, and the most remote of all the inhabited islands in the archipelago. The landscape of New Island is much like that of parts of Scotland. The hilly island is wind-swept and covered with high brown grass and peat bogs. It has become a popular destination for small expedition ships, so that passengers can enjoy the stunning scenery, bird-watching, as well as offshore sightings of dolphins, penguins, sea lions and fur seals. The northern and eastern shores have high cliffs, so landings are made on the eastern coast beaches, where there are a number of huts.

The entire island is one of the most beautiful in the group, and is a Nature Reserve. Long used as a whaling base, sheep farm, and source of guano, it is home to possibly the most diverse range of wildlife in the region, having over 40 of the Falklands’ breeding bird species. Ship passengers land just a matter of steps away from one of the oldest building in the Falklands, the Charles Barnard building that was built in 1812-1813, and that has been carefully restored. It now houses a small museum and visitor centre.

Interestingly, although the Falklands are usually very windy, the climate is temperate year-round. It rarely snows, and when it does, it rarely sticks. The island is covered with just grasses, and wildlife include seals, sea lions , cottontail rabbits, various species of penguins, gulls, skuas and albratrosses among others. The island is secured by the New Island Conservation Trust, a charitable organisation that manages wildlife protection and careful management.
