Kemi lies at the northern end of the Bay of Bothnia, off the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the river Kemijoki. It is part of the Lapland region of Finland, bordered clockwise by the gulf, Sweden, Norway and Russia. Its deep water harbour is the northernmost for Finland, and just 92 km south of the Arctic Circle. The main economic activity centres of two paper and pulpwood mills, and the only chromium mine in Europe (4% of world’s supply). The waters at the top of this branch of the Baltic Sea have only 0.2% salinity, with many freshwater fish, and the sea freezes over 5 months of the year (mid-December to mid-May).

Kemi Gemstone Gallery displays a model of the Crown of Finland, and replicas of the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain, the Sceptre of the Czar of Russia, the Orbs of Denmark, the 647-diamond necklace of Marie Antoinette, and other items. Kemi also produces the world's largest snow castle each year to a different design. The snow castle is usually located at the inner harbour of Kemi, and visitors tour its rooms and marvel at its artwork and nighttime lighting (and one can stay overnight). Stroll around town and look for the pink Gothic church. The Sampo Ice Breaker runs trips through the iced sea if you happen to be there at that time, and ice swimming – you wear a partially inflated set suit to float.

The open-cut and underground chromite mine is 8km to the NW of Kemi, quite an impressive site. The Chromite is used in steel production at Tornio Steel Factory, 20 km to the NW. Less than 30 minutes away is Tornio, on the Swedish border, known for its art, handicrafts and history. Visitors are attracted to the region by the white-water rivers and spectacular Bothnian Bay National Park archipelago, which provide a wealth of opportunities for fishing, river rafting and sailing.
