Villagarcia (or Vilagarcía de Arousa) is a seaport situated on the Ría (bay) of Arousa in Galicia, Spain. It is situated 45 km south of Santiago de Compostela in the NW of the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal lies 55 km to the south. Fishing and boatbuilding are the chief local industries, and exports include lumber and sardines. It is also a seaside resort, with beaches nearby at Comba, Concha, and Compostela. A key sight is Pazode Rubianes. – the 600-year historic home, vineyards, manicured gardens, camellias, and winery.

The present site of the city has been occupied since prehistoric times. The area contains Roman remains as well as the Rubianes manor house (16th century) and the palace and monastery of Vista Alegre (17th century). But the town is famous worldwide for something else these days. Every year on the hottest day, August 16th, the great 'Water Festival' takes place. It started 10 years ago when a street procession with their saint's statue were begging for drought breaking rain. Those who were looking on, from the balconies, obeyed the plea and threw buckets full over them.

So, they repeat the event through the streets, and water is poured over the crowds. Last festival, people of all ages received a drenching from more than 30 tons of water that were discharged from fire engines and water-hydrants. But anything goes – buckets of water, water from hoses, balloons or any other method, from the balconies. In this fun-filled water festival anything wet goes! The really daring folk finish up by shedding ALL their uncomfortable and soaking wet gear!
