Santa Cruz de Tenerife (commonly known as Santa Cruz) is the capital the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. The port is of great importance and is the communications hub between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, with cruise ships arriving from many nations. Not surprisingly, the city has a real cosmopolitan mix due to immigrants from Latin America, Africa and Western Europe. Santa Cruz is the second largest city of the European Union outside of Europe, and is also the capital of the island of Tenerife. Don’t miss the Museum of Nature and Man as it has become a world reference in regard to the preservation of mummies.

Important landmarks of the city include the Auditorium of Tenerife with its famous shape of sails, the Santa Cruz Towers that are the tallest twin towers in Spain. Then there’s the Tenerife Space of Arts that houses a contemporary museum, a Library and a Centre for Photography. Tenerife International Centre for Trade Fairs and Congress is a multipurpose building that can host major fairs, exhibitions and conferences, while the Great Hall located on the top floor is the largest covered space of the Canary Islands. Playa de Las Teresitas is a village beach, yet one of the most important beaches of the Canary Islands.

Also of great interest to visitors is the neighbouring La Laguna, the centre of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as walking its streets is likened to taking a journey back in time. Climb the tower of La Iglesia de la Concepción to look over the valley in which it sits, and the beautiful Anaga Mountain range behind. Calle Noria which extends from La Plaza is the place to eat, night or day. With its brightly-painted buildings it will remind you of Habana. It’s full of cafés, bars and restaurants, some quirky and all excellent.
