The port city of Santander is the capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria, situated on the north coast of Spain between Asturias and the Basque Country. Today Santander remains a popular tourist destination renowned for its mild climate hence the urban beaches - some of which are great for surfing - are a real draw card. Indeed one of the city’s main attractions is the famous El Sardinero beach with its delightful promenade. Then there’s the Magdalena peninsula, on which la Magdalena Park and the royal palace are sited. Also very popular with visitors is the trip along Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela and the neighbouring Altamira Caves, both of which have been declared World Heritage Sites.

Its historic quarter includes a group of majestic buildings which are situated against an incredible natural backdrop of sea and mountains. Its marine and commercial tradition is linked to a century old history of tourism. The nearby 13th C. Cathedral is one of the city’s oldest buildings. Inside there’s a tomb, a delightful sculpture, and under the crypt is a sombre vaulted chamber in which various traces of the Roman era were discovered. Opposite the cathedral is the Plaza Porticada surrounded by several public buildings situated on lively commercial streets.

The streets are also home to the plaza del Generalísimo, the Town Hall, and the popular market of la Esperanza, in the modernist style. Also very worthwhile visiting are the Fine Arts Museum and the Menendez Pelayo Stately Home, a building that has been declared an Historic-Artistic Site. Near the capital is the Cabarceno Nature Park, an area of great natural beauty where various species of animals virtually live in the wild. As it is situated halfway between the sea and the mountains, Santander’s restaurants offer a unique mixture of dishes that truly should be tried.
