Cruises visiting Roses & all Roses cruises for  2019

View Roses 2019 cruises for 2 ships listing 7 cruises from Roses with today's best deals!

Roses is a municipality and important fishing port and tourist centre situated on the coast at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses in Catalonia, Spain. Founded in the 5th century BC by Greeks, it was later settled by Romans and ruins from this period can be seen today. Attacks by Turkish pirates in the 16th century led top surrounding the town with a bastioned wall, and Castell de la Trinitat. Soon followed regular French invasions, all leaving their mark. When they finally withdrew in 1814, the French blew up the Castell de la Trinitat as a parting gesture.

Today the fort has been partially restored and well worth a visit. In recent decades tourism has blossomed (like a rose?). In summer its population expands six-fold with visitors from Spain, France, Germany and the UK. You allow a few hours to visit the citadel, and see the Pyrinee Mountains from the garden. There’s a good water park for families, Aqua Brava. Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Emporda is on the bay with walkways, birdlife, lagoon – a wonderful natural area. The very large Parc Megalitic de Roses has some stunning scenery and the dolmens (single megalithic tombs) are fascinating.

Take a 2-hour (bumpy and dusty) ’train’ (tractor) trip to the top of a local mountain for some fantastic views of the Bay – highly recommended, and comes with choo-choo sounds, multi-languages, and music. Nearby is El Bulli, one of the world's best and most famous restaurants. The restaurant had a limited season from June to December. Booking a table for the next year is made on a single day after the closing of the current season. It accommodates only 8,000 diners a season, but gets more than two million requests. Good luck as it closed in July, 2011 as it never made a profit!
