Situated on the Atlantic coast of Spain, Gijon began as a fishing village almost 3,000 years ago, and today is an important port that is an attractive combination of seafaring flavour, heritage buildings, and modern urban development. The city’s major tourist attraction is the historic fishing village of Cimadevilla, located on a peninsula that divides the port in half. Most of its streets are made of cobblestones and are barely two cars wide, reminding visitors of its historic past, as do many of the buildings that have withstood the forces of the Atlantic. Be sure to take a themed walk to visit all of its historic sites.

A hike up the hill to the Cerro de Santa Catalina, a park on the tip of the peninsula, provides exceptional views of the outstretched coastline. The park also contains an abstract sculpture named the Elogio del Horizonte, Praise of the Horizon. It is one of 16 large sculptures recently placed in public spaces throughout the city. In the summer, with its warm temperatures, the beaches become extremely popular. La Playa de Poniente is the smaller of two beaches and is wrapped around the harbour. The other, la Playa de San Lorenzo, is much larger and arcs its way around the far side of the city.

The museums are also very popular, especially The Museo de la Gaita that displays bagpipes from around the world. For those who love shopping, in addition to the town’s wide range of stores be sure to visit the Ecological and Crafts Market of Gijon, where vendors attempt to replicate traditional crafts, while promoting products that are environmentally friendly. Also to be enjoyed are the skills of Gijon’s restauranteurs who offer a varied menu including tapas, fine wines, famous cakes and home-made ice-cream.
