Machala is a city on the Pacific coast of SW Ecuador. The city of a quarter million population is a commercial centre for the local agricultural industries, particularly bananas, coffee and cocoa – and is often referred to as “The Banana Capital of the World.” Puerto Bolivar is 7km from the city centre, and one of the world’s largest shipment points for bananas, most destined for Europe. About 60 km inland, the coastal plain rises to the Central Andes with peaks reaching over 4000 m. Machala is not noted as a tourist destination, rather it is transport hub linking Guayaquil in the north to Peru in the south.

The city centre is marked by a large Catholic church and a central plaza with fountain. Parque Juan Montalvo is the main plaza. The bus stations, most hotels and restaurants are within six blocks of here. Walk around the city centre where you’ll find the Parque Diego Minuche gardened mall. The World Banana Fair and Reina Mundial del Banano (a worldwide beauty pageant) are held the third week in September, when Machala celebrates all things banana. And at one of the main intersections there’s a gigantic Monumento al Bamamero set amidst gardens and fountains.

Around Puerto Bolivar there are numerous harbour restaurants, and you can watch the shrimp and banana trade activities. Safety is a concern, so act wisely. Rent a canoe and paddle around the mangroves surrounding the harbour. Inland, the protected area of Petrified Forest Puyango is a distant 111 km from the city, a two hour drive. Its attraction is that it has the largest collection of fossilised tree trunks and flora of the Mesozoic Era in the world, up to 2 m in diameter and 15 m long. Visitors report amazement at what they see, as also the panoramic views on the journey there.
