Cruises visiting Isla Fernandina & all Isla Fernandina cruises for  2019

View Isla Fernandina 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 4 cruises from Isla Fernandina with today's best deals!

Isla Fernandina is the third largest and youngest island of the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador. It is in fact an active shield volcano that has been erupting since 2009, and consequently has a mostly rocky surface and does not have much plant life apart from the mangrove forests. Punta Espinoza is a narrow stretch of land where hundreds of marine iguanas gather in large groups on black lava rocks that seem to be moving. The Marine Iguanas are excellent swimmers that can stay submerged for over an hour, and are found only on this island and simply cover the area.

A careful look though will present small Lava Lizards and Sally Lightfoot Crabs. Fernandina is considered the most pristine of the Galápagos Islands and has had no species of mammals introduced, which sets it apart from most of the other islands in the archipelago. Take the time to thoroughly appreciate a climb up to the outskirts of the crater and thus enjoy seeing such delightful sights as the famous Flightless Cormorant, as well as penguins, pelicans and sea lions, all of which adds up to a fantastic experience. Snorkeling off Isla Fernandina is most popular.

The highlight is to see several Marine Iguanas swimming and feeding on algae under water. They are endemic to the islands and they are also the only lizards in the word that swim in the sea. The Marine Iguanas spend most of their time on land, but they feed on algae and seaweed. At Punta Espinosa on Isla Fernandina visitors can easily spend hours exploring the many tidal pools created in the lava rock, and what is in the shallow water around. In the tidal pools are seen tube worms, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, small crabs, and anemones, to name just a few.
