Cruises visiting Isla Española & all Isla Española cruises for  2019

View Isla Española 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 4 cruises from Isla Española with today's best deals!

Isla Española, named in honour of Spain, is the most southerly as well as the oldest island in the Galápagos Archipelago, Ecuador. Its remote location and seclusion from other islands has resulted in Isla Española having a large number of endemic fauna. For example the marine iguanas here are the only ones that change colour during the breeding season. Other popular fauna include albatrosses and the mating dances of the blue-footed boobies. Even the Waved Albatross is found on the island. You are sure to appreciate your visit to this part of the Galápagos National Park.

Española Island, originally named by the British Hood Island after Viscount Samuel Hood, is reputed to be the oldest of all the Islands in the Galápagos Archipelago. Two spots are especially popular with visitors: Bahía Gardner, which has a lovely beach; and Punta Suárez, of interest because of its varied bird-life. This island has its own species of animals, such as the Española mockingbird, which has a longer and more curved beak than the one on the central islands; the Española lava lizard; and the marine iguana of a subspecies that has red markings on its back.

While Española Island is one of the oldest of the Galápagos Islands, the island is dying, slowly becoming a rocky, barren land with little or no vegetation. But this does produce large bays, with sand and soft shingle that attract a healthy number of Galápagos sea lions. Here there are also swallow-tailed gulls and other tropical birds. An island a short distance offshore provides good, but sometimes rough, snorkelling and scuba diving. Interestingly, the island's steep cliffs serve as perfect runways for large birds, which take off for their ocean feeding grounds near the mainland of Ecuador and Peru.
