Cruises visiting Puerto Egas & all Puerto Egas cruises for  2019

Puerto Egas is one of the most popular sites in the Galápagos archipelago of Ecuador and lies south of James Bay on the island of Santiago. The island consists of two overlapping volcanoes, the tallest of which has a height of 907m. Due to great volcanic activity in the past, it has a fantastic black sand beach. At the southern end of James Bay is Puerto Egas where two separate trails take off, the first along the coast to the fur seal grottos and the second inland to the Salt Mine Volcano, named after its owner Dario Egas.

Puerto Egas is named for the 1960s company owner, Hector Egas. The mine is a small volcanic cone whose crater has a seasonal, salt-water lagoon, where flamingos and other birds can be seen. Galápagos hawks are often observed in the area. Puerto Egas is well known for its long, flat, black lava shoreline, where eroded shapes form lava pools, caves, and inlets that house a great variety of wildlife. It's also a great place to see colonies of marine iguanas basking in the sun, and hundreds of Sally Lightfoot crabs attracting hunting herons. The inlets are also a favourite haunt of the surprisingly agile Galápagos fur sea-lions.

The sea-lions prefer rocky coastlines where shade is available and the grottos at Puerto Egas are ideal. Also of interest are the ruins of a salt company with its numerous current inhabitants of sea lions, chameleons, lizards and herons. Along the shoreline there is an excellent variety of wildlife including marine and land iguanas that find their respective ideal habitats amongst the eroded rock formations found on the beach. Be sure to take some delightful photos and also take the opportunity to do some snorkelling and enjoy the colourful fish.
