Isla Bartolome is an islet and one of the younger islands in the Galápagos archipelago (Ecuador) that lies just off the east coast of Santiago Island. It consists of an extinct volcano and a variety of red, orange, green, and glistening black volcanic formations that result in some truly delightful landscapes. The volcanic cone is easy to climb and provides great views of the other islands. Pinnacle Rock - one of the most recognised landmarks in the Galápagos – is surrounded by two perfect golden beaches. Visitors can swim and snorkel with the penguins, marine turtles, white-tipped reef sharks (they are not harmful), and other tropical fish.

Also appreciated is the clarity of the water and the underwater walls of the collapsed tuff cone. The bay, just across the isthmus, is also an excellent swimming spot. Penguins are frequently seen and a small cave behind Pinnacle Rock houses a breeding colony. Seasonally, the isle is the mating and nesting site for the green turtles that make use of the gentler beaches, together with the herons. The Galápagos Lava cacti colonise the new lava fields. Truly the experience leaves visitors feeling: great, in a special place, on a stunning planet.

There are many iconic barren formations that are not to be missed. Thoroughly enjoy the dry desolate moonscape formed by different volcanic cones, lava bombs and cinder cones, and be amazed at how light some of the rocks are. Visitors come here not only for the animals, but for the scenery and a better application of both the geology and succession of species that must take place before an island is flat and full of soil and greenery. This is the best place to see beautiful landscapes of a ‘newly’ extinct volcano.
