Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, situated on the west side of a bay of the Mediterranean Sea. A big, bustling, whitewashed city, the modern part is built along the seashore and is overlooked by the old part set on a hill, the ancient city of the deys (Ottoman rulers), and crowned at the top (122 m above the sea) by the historic neighbourhood of the Casbah (citadel and quarter surround it) dating to the 17th century. Algiers was the most successful of all the Barbary slave pirate bases (16-19th C), and was also the most cherished of all French colonial centres.

The Casbah is classified as an historic site and a vast restoration and upgrading plan is underway for the ancient city. It preserves very interesting traditional Arab Mediterranean houses and magnificent mosques dating back to the 16th century. Today it is filled with narrow roads, shops and dwellings. Algiers has many public buildings of interest, including the Grand Post Office, the Monument des Martyrs, and Notre Dame d'Afrique. Bab El Oued is the popular district that extends from the Casbah beyond "the gate of the river". It is the capital's best liked borough, famous for its square with “the three clocks” and for its “market Triplet”, district of workshops and manufacturing plants.

Walk the boulevard along the water edge past the town hall, law courts, buildings, theatre, and palace of the Governor. Didouche Mourad street in the 3rd district Of Algiers extends from the Grande Post office to the Heights of Algiers. It is regarded as the heart of the capital. The magnificent Botanical Garden of Hamma, also known as The Test Garden Hamma, is a 58-hectare botanical garden and arboretum located in the Mohamed Belouizdad district of Algiers. It was established in 1832 and is now still considered one of the most important botanical gardens in the world.
