Helsingor, just an hour’s train ride from Copenhagen, basks on Denmark's North Riviera surrounded by golden beaches and dense forest. It is possibly best known for being the home of the UNESCO-designated Dutch Renaissance-style Kronborg Castle that boasts the impressive claim of having provided the setting for Hamlet. Originally built in 1574, it is also of immense symbolic value to the Danish people as it played a key role in the history of northern Europe in the 16th-18th centuries. The castle’s breathtaking 62 m-long ballroom also draws numerous visitors. Strategically located overlooking the Sound, it is visited each year by about 200,000 people.

The Danes, most of whom speak proficient English, are very helpful to tourists, as well as being strong believers in equality and fairness. They live by the Law of Jante which states that: ‘It is frowned upon to appear to elevate oneself or claim to be better or smarter than others’. A charming town of half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and castles, Helsingor is easily explored by bicycle. If interested in art, be sure to visit the Marienlyst Palace and Park to view the collection of paintings closely associated with Helsingor, and delightful locally-crafted silver items.

Many appreciate visiting the Helsingor Cemetery where lovely monuments highlight the local history of WW1. Then there’s the National Museum of Science and Technology with its large collection of steam engines, bicycles, motorcycles, antique cars as well as more than 30 airplanes. Also centrally located are both the Carmelite Monastery that is a great example of late medieval architecture, and the Church of St. Mary. Opportunities for sailing and swimming abound, and there is also is a world-class 18-hole golf course. Helsingor is a charming small town with big city benefits.
