Sassnitz is a popular Baltic resort town and fishing port on the Jasmund peninsula, Rügen Island, in Germany. Around 100km to the north across the Baltic Sea is Sweden, and capital Copenhagen. The city has many noble mansions – German Baltic “resort architecture”. Sassnitz countryside is known for its white chalk cliffs and wooded forests of the Jasmund National Park, a prime tourist destination. The Königsstuhl ("King's Chair") is the best known cliff at 118m. There’s a cliff top path that provides wonderful views to sea. The Park offers guided walks and a wonderful museum, as well as Rügen's only zoo.

Locals and visitors alike flock to the atmospheric harbour with its fishing boats, yachts, trawlers, passenger ferries and pleasure boats. Sassnitz's harbour wall goes further out to sea than any other on Rügen. The Fishing and Harbour Museum documents the history of fishing on Rügen and the old Sassnitz harbour. Its surroundings and historic centre, in which many beautiful ancient houses have been preserved, make Sassnitz an attractive holiday destination. The harbour’s Alaris Butterfly Park opened in 2003, and is home to hundreds of free-flying butterflies in a tropical environment.

If you’ve never had the chance to see the innards of an old submarine and always wanted to, the U-Boat Museum is the place is for you. View the British submarine HMS Otus, a museum piece. Visitors can walk from the back to the front while things and their purposed are well described. Photography is allowed and the staff are friendly and helpful. For those not afraid of heights, there’s a 243m suspension footbridge that curves between the upper town and the harbour area, which gives great views, and is a must to walk.
