Nierstein lies on the Rhine between Mainz and Worms where the Flugelsbach empties into the Rhine. It is said to be built on a site on which a Roman settlement stood over 2,000 years ago. Surrounded by 2700 acres of vines, Nierstein is the largest wine-growing community on the Rhine and boasts Germany's oldest documented vineyard, Glock, surrounding St. Kilian's Church. The amateur palaeontologists Arnulf Stapf (father) and Harald Stapf (son) show in the Paläontologisches Museum Nierstein, which they themselves built up, rare footprints of insects, amphibians and reptiles from the Permian period, as well as fossils from throughout the world.

The municipality’s second biggest field of economic endeavour is tourism, catering to hikers and cyclists as well as day visitors. Visit and taste wines at the Co-operative Winery. This is a great starting point for a hike or drive up to the Watchtower, the highest viewpoint in the vineyards. At certain times of the year tasting stands - where much can be learned - are set up along the route but the fascinating views are well worth the effort.

Many visit the four springs at Sironabad, and the amazing collection of historical buildings, some of which are surrounded by defensive walls, in the Free Imperial Village’s old downtown centre. From Nierstein many take the opportunity to tour Heidelberg and the Odenwald region. Heidelberg is one of Germany's biggest tourist attractions. Overlooked by the half ruined Schloss Heidelberg, the narrow twisting streets contain a wealth of old squares, traditional pubs and interesting buildings including those of the famous university.
