Aschaffenburg is a small city in NW Bavaria, Germany. Situated on the river Main, in the west it opens to the Rhine-Main plain. It enjoys a relatively mild climate and has some delightful Mediterranean gardens overlooking the river. Be sure to visit the massive Renaissance palace that dominates the city, and appreciate local history by visiting the Historic Steps and the Town Gate. Also worth visiting are Schöntal Park, the marina on the river Main between the Willigis and Adenauer bridges, as well as some great Museums and galleries, such as the State Art Gallery.

A large recreational complex is located in the district of Leider. It includes an indoor and outdoor swimming pool complex as well as an indoor ice rink and tennis courts, which are open to the general public. There certainly is much to do in ‘Bavarian Nice’ the alternative name for this small city. Johannisburg mit Schlossanlagen is a huge restored castle with a large collection of ancient as well as modern art. They also have an expansive collection of models/replicas of the coliseum and other historic ruins. Hofbibliothek is a great building in which to see history.

Visit the beautiful Park Schonbusch on a sunny afternoon. There is both a restaurant and a beer garden, with the beer garden selling tradition German food such as currywurst. There are some great walking tracks that take you around the lake. You can also go rowing on the lake. There is even a little village, play areas, a castle and a maze! It is highly recommend to spend a couple of hours there even if it is a 30 minute walk from the city centre. Don’t miss breathtaking views, by taking a walk along the banks of the River Main.
