Cruises visiting Maio & all Maio cruises for  2019-2020

Maio is the easternmost of the Sotavento islands of the island country Cape Verde, in the Atlantic Ocean 600 km W of Africa. Maio is located south of the island of Boa Vista and east of Santiago. Measuring 15 km by 22 km, its population is around 10,000, and the island’s tourism is slowly being developed. The island is known for its sandy beaches and several new forest areas that are unusual for Cape Verde. The capital of the island, Vila do Maio, with its central plaza and white Portuguese colonial-style church, is located directly overlooking the ocean in the southwest.

Then there’s the little town of Morro, surrounded by a grove of coconut palms that is also located in the west of the island and which has a very beautiful swimming beach with fine sand. During the summer, turtles nest here. Visitors can expect to find sleepy towns with colourful little houses, some decorated with flowers, wandering goats, and above all, a lot of tranquillity. People sit in front of their houses, dreaming away, and time seems to stand still. As a result of afforestation measures, Maio now has the largest continuous woodland area of Cape Verde. Apart from the treed areas, the vegetation is quite sparse, with some palm oases.

Bird-watchers appreciate viewing: bar-tailed larks; coursers; cream-coloured coursers and even ospreys. Not to be missed are the sea swallows and waders in the saline pools near Vila do Maio. The island also has beautiful broad secluded beaches that run for many kilometres. The salt marshes in the north were mined in the 17th and 18th C, and in the following years mostly goat shepherds remained.
