Antilla is a town of 12,500 located on the NE shore of Cuba, on a peninsula between the Gulf of Nipe and Banes Bay. It saw naval fighting during the Spanish-American War (1898, the Battle of Nipes), served military purposes in the early 1900s, and the town was founded in 1907 as a railway terminal and port town. This was a boom town at the turn of the 21st C, as a major shipping port for lumber and sugar. Today, unused train lines extend out to sea on a concrete wharf now crumbling. In town classic buildings of a past Spanish architecture show wear and effects of past cyclones.

Today there are signs of a possible future tourist boom. Large cruise ships call at the port, and a number of smart-looking hotels are adjacent to the beach front, surrounded by palm trees. The region is rich in molluscs, crustaceans fish and bird life. Work is being done on the proposal of a protected area in the El Ramón Peninsula, with the category of Wildlife Refuge. The local economy is supported by livestock, fisheries and agriculture. If touring the countryside you’ll see sugar cane growing, cane trains, sugar mills, rum and cigar factories.

The City of Holguin is about 70 km by road to the west. It is the country’s fourth largest city and a provincial capital. Filled with vintage Chevvies and plazas filled with children sharing wi-fi, it is a city of many attractions – no tour groups, good food, unrushed life style. Wherever you travel in Cuba, learn about local culture, and take a few gifts as give-aways.
