Cocos Island (Isla del Coco) is located 500 km SW of Costa Rica, in the Pacific Ocean. The Galapagos Islands lie a further 700 km to the SW of Cocos Island. It is an oceanic island of both volcanic and tectonic origin, one of the National Parks of Costa Rica, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island of 8 km by 3 km is inhabited solely by Costa Rican Park Rangers. Surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, Cocos Island is admired by scuba divers for its populations of hammerhead sharks, rays, dolphins and other large marine species.

The extremely wet climate and oceanic character also gives Cocos a unique ecological character differing from the Galápagos Archipelago and other islands in the region. The rangers have established two camps, including one at English Bay. Tourists and ship crew members are allowed ashore only with permission of island rangers, and are not permitted to camp, stay overnight or collect any flora, fauna or minerals from the island. In 2009 Cocos Island was short-listed as a candidate to be declared one of the New7Wonders of Nature of the world, and ranked second in the islands category.

Cocos Island was also named one of the best 10 scuba diving spots in the world by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. The main attractions are the large pelagic fish species. Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau visited the island several times and called it "the most beautiful island in the world". Also, many believe the stories of vast pirate treasures buried on the island. The landscape is mountainous and irregular, with many waterfalls (its annual rainfall is 7 m) and the summit is Cerro Iglesias at 576 m. Steep 100 m cliffs ring much of the island.
