Macau (Macao) is a free port, and a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China. It lies on the western side of the Zhujiang (Pearl) River estuary, facing the South China Sea. The territory’s economy is based on gambling, tourism (30 million visitors annually), financial services and textile manufacturing. It has a humid subtropical climate.

From a 16th century Portuguese colony it has come a long way, surpassing Las Vegas the world’s top casino centre, and is the most densely populated country/state in the world (at 18,500 per Its cultural heritage is Chinese-Portuguese – try the local cuisine. The city hosts many annual festivals and events.

Macau preserves over 20 historical sites within a small area – buildings, churches, squares and gardens. The best way to get around is by foot, so explore the ‘old city’ over cobbled pave stones and up and down the hilly terrain. Take a complimentary shuttle bus, or a cycle rickshaw for a few hours’ tour of the city. Try Macau Tower for views, and Fisherman’s Wharf for shopping.
