Easy to contact by phone or email. Regular correspondence prior to cruise departure. Liked the wallet sent out with info. However, we did not use the lanyards supplied. There is no quick release mechanism to prevent accidental choking if it catches on something. I thought quick release catches were a mandatory safety feature of modern lanyards?"

Talcahuano (“Thundering Sky”), in central Chile, is on the Pacific coast of South America, at about the same latitude as Buenos Airies to the east. The port and city were severely damaged by the massive earthquake in 2010 and the following tsunami that left many boats high and dry. Talcahuano is the site of Chile’s main naval base and submarine fleet, and home to the historic restored ironclad turret ship Huáscar. Visitors (with passport) can inspect this floating museum of historical significance to Peru and Chile. It is situated at the entrance to the bay of Conception, 11km to the north of Talcahuano.

Other sights in and around the city are: La Tortuga Coliseum, the largest roofed gymnasium in Chile, a symbol of Talcahuano. Sailors offer a guided tour of the naval base, the plaza de los Héroes, ‘El Vaticano’, Naval Port, shipyard and breakwater. The Mall Plaza del Trébol Shopping Center is a modern shopping centre about 10km SE of the port. About 12 km south of the city, Hualpén Museum is a magnificent, old stately home, surrounded by lovely gardens, housing valuable collections, from armoury of the 18th Century, to mummies and valuable documents of national history.

There are excellent beaches, such as Playa Ramuntcho, about 10km to the west of the city. Other matters of interest: Talcahuano averages about three earthquakes a month. As a result of the 2010 8.8 magnitude earthquake, the city rose 1.5m, and full recovery will yet take years. And a player for the local club Estrella del Mar invented the famous bicycle kick (also known as "chilena") there in 1914.
