Tierra del Fuego (“Land of Fire”) is an archipelago off the southern tip of the South American mainland, south of the Strait of Magellan. Isla Grande is the main island, along with a group of many islands including Cape Horn and Diego Ramírez Islands. Half of Isla Grande and the islands west and south are part of the Magallanes Antarctica Chilean Region. The eastern part is controlled by Argentina. In an area where snow falls even in the summer, thirty percent of the archipelago has forests. Indeed, many varieties from here have been successfully introduced to other parts of the world with similar climates that were once devoid of trees.

Tierra del Fuego, with its beautiful and almost bizarre landscape, is remarkably preserved due to its insularity. Great plains, ancient forests lakes, glaciers and a variety of flora and fauna await you. It’s known for its dramatic landscape of snowy mountains, glaciers, tundra and wind-sculpted trees. The main island Isla Grande is home to the Argentine resort town of Ushuaia, the port of embarkation for Antarctica. Sometimes called “the End of the World,” Ushuaia is a gateway to Antarctica to the south. Have an adventurous time by trekking, horse riding, cycling or sports fishing.

A popular destination in Tierra del Fuego is Parque Pinguino Rey, with its King Penguins, the second largest penguin species. The penguins are considered world-wide superstars, as so many people from all over the world come to see them. So if you visit Chile and intend to go down to the south pole, you have to make a stop in Punta Arenas and get to Tierra Del Fuego to see these friendly penguins. In this area you’ll also see Flamencos, Guanacos and other wildlife. While distant and isolated, Tierra del Fuego is by no means cut off from the mainland.
